Update on the Hair

Ya, I know that even though my last post showed me, it didn't actually show me (in any recognizable way). But since I've had a request for a current picture of our hair in it's Post-St. Baldrick's state, we made an effort to get some this weekend of the three of us.

Now, let me explain something. I am not, as I believe I've mentioned, a particularly vain person. I don't wear makeup. I usually wear sweats or jeans. I don't style my hair. And I've always been fine with my appearance that way.

However, without my hair, I've started to feel less and less attractive. Well, not exactly less attractive, but more manly.

I'm more likely to wear a low cut shirt or jewelry to remind people that I'm not a dude. That, however, presents the additional risk of making me look like a tranny.

Which is much more demoralizing than just looking manly.

The worst thing about my hair in this growing out stage is that I can't just get out of bed and put it in a pony tail. I have to occasionally use things like gel. (And sometimes, even when I use the gel, I can still look remarkably like a person who's just gotten out of bed. Which makes all the effort seem totally pointless. Sometimes it looks better if I just let it be. And it almost always looks better if I just put a hat on.)

As a reminder... here we are Post-Shave, Pre-Growing It Out

And here is the most recent picture of us (left to right- Jenny, Aurora, me), complete with what looks like bed head, but was actually an unsuccessful attempt at styling on my part. Actually, it was Jenny that did the styling, but I don't think she should be held accountable for my uncooperative hair.

So, as Aurora mentioned this weekend, all of the people who donated to St. Baldrick's should know that they're getting they're money's worth. It's not like we just shaved our heads and are now back to free and easy hair care. We're now going through that uncomfortable stage of 'growing it out'. Which, in my opinion at least, is less fun than actually being bald.

Because there's no bed head when you're bald.

  1. Beauty comes from within, and I say you all look so beautiful.
I found your blog from CAP & have been reading it all morning!
How is the kitty & what is her name?
We are currently ripping out the carpet & putting in laminate flooring.
And I have to laugh, I also have lots of old wood furniture that can't stand a drop of water or even high humidity. hopefully some day I get courage to refinish them.
    Keep up the good blog!

  2. Geez, Wen, I think you look an awful lot like your short-haired Mom, especially your smile. Your face is a little fuller than her's was, maybe not quite as angular, but the resemblance is very evident.

  4. I've been shaving my head on and off since I was about eight years old, and ALWAYS the hardest part about growing it out was what I called the Hedge Hog stage, followed shortly after by the Ferris Bueler stage. Having a shaved head is easy, because you have a lot of people who compliment you in an effort to put you at ease, but once it begins truly growing it out, you start to feel mannish in appearance. My way of combating that was to pierce my ears and wear HUGE silver hoops... If people thought I was a transvestite, well, I was a tranny with style ;)

  5. So which chick are you? I'm confused!

Well, for what it's worth, I think all three of ya look great bald and w/ the pixie type hair growth.

I like the little clip in the girl in the middle's hair. Adds to femininity I think.

Such a brave gesture! I could never shave my head. I've thought many times about donating to Locks of Love but haven't had the balls to do it.

  7. Vicki, we've decided on Isadora. Makes me realize I need to do a catch up post. Lots of unanswered questions.

Fairyflutters, I'm the one on the right and I've also updated the post with who is who.

And thank you all for the complements (Linda, yours especially).

  9. It may be the lack of sleep I've been getting (as Conner was sick for a week and I haven't recovered and then he decided to wake up at 5:30 this morning), but as I read your blog I started laughing and couldn't stop.  And by the time I saw the picture I was almost crying.  Why?  Not because I think you look hideous, but because I could imagine you standing in front of the mirror trying to decide how manly or tranny you look on that particular morning and then debating on how to "fix" the problem.  I was also thinking about your 5th/6th grade hairstyle that was almost shaved on one side and longer on the other (you thought you were soooooo cool) and how maybe you should try that again.  And I also thought about the time I cut your hair when you came to Georgia in high school.  I left you with more hair than you have now, but I'm sure that dull sewing scissors weren't the best way to go.  And the perms!!!  I don't even want to think about the history of my hair!  I think you should do a blog/photo progression on the life of your hair.  What do you think?  Your loving cousin, Melody

  12. Melody, what are you talking about? I was sooooooo cool. I loved that haircut.

And I'd forgotten that I let you cut mine when I visited.

I think a history of my hair would be an interesting set of pictures. Though, actually, I'm not sure I have any pictures of it shaved on one side and long on the other. I guess my mom didn't want to capture that one for posterity. Damn.

  13. I gotta say - you all look pretty cute with your short hairs.

And, really, a series of "growing it out" photos with your cute faces might entice more people to go through this ritual for a good cause.

Take some of the scare out of it.

If my head weren't round like a GDF jack-o-lantern, I might even do it. But alas, I'm like a pumpkin on a stick. A curvy stick with chicken ankles. Sorry, TMI.
