And I'm Spent

Since Mother's Day (the average last frost day in Colorado) I've put almost 600 plants in the ground in our front yard.

My goal was to get rid of the lawn and give this area a somewhat woodland feel. But since the area is only partially shaded, gets pretty hot and doesn't get a ton of rain, realistically, I couldn't fill it with all the ferns that I wanted to.

The dirt is good, though. Actually, the dirt is great. After sheet composting it a year ago and growing cover crops and wildflowers last summer, it has really black, rich earth.

The bulk of my plantings have been transplants...

about 300 Buttercup plants from a friend (that's 2 of the 3 hundred plants)

and about 300 Sweet Woodruff plants moved from the backyard.

I also put in the 'Sun Power' hostas, columbines and various ground covers that I got for Mother's Day. But their numbers were less impressive.

All I ever want for Mother's Day is one uninterrupted day of gardening. I'm a simple person. And I almost always get my wish.

You can see what it looks like (for now) here.

  1. So *that's* what happened to the front lawn.

It all makes so much sense now!

  3. Gill, it has a long way to go to fill in and actually look green. It's amazing how little area 600 plants covered. But I'll get a picture soon.

Right now it's mostly leaves (as mulch) and cardboard paths (to keep everyone off of the good dirt). And the buttercups look pretty puny after transplanting. I have high hopes for next spring, though.
