My tutorials are in no way those of an expert. They are written from the point of view of a person who is still learning, but has tried MANY different approaches. Because of this I may provide an overabundance of details that would be completely irrelevant to someone with experience, but very helpful to those who are new to the activity. Also I provide these tutorials for free. I feel very strongly that my readers should never have to pay money to learn here (like for patterns and recipes). My goal is to share with as many people as possible, *especially* those who might not be able to afford it. I, myself, receive so much useful information from the internet; this is my way of passing on the good karma. Because of this you may one day see handpicked advertising on this site. I hope it doesn’t make you cry.

I think the point of life is to live it in a way that makes you happy. I don’t mean always getting everything you want, or never experiencing anything unpleasant, but being able to roll with it and for the most part, finding peace, enjoyment or a sense of ease in the things that you do. This blog is really an extension of that… things in my life that make it all worth while.

Our parenting goal is “to raise healthy, happy and self-reliant children who help make the world a better place.” And I must continually remind myself that there are many ways to allow that to happen. I have always considered one of my parenting roles as that of a teacher, long before I began to contemplate homeschooling. So that’s what you’ll get here, the kinds of things that we’ve always done with our kids because learning is actually pretty fun.

I am a consummate DIYer, raised by two generations of DIYers, who did it themselves before there was even a term for it. I grew up in a family full of people who knew their way around the woodshop, or sewing room, or construction site, or ceramics studio… people who were comfortable with 2 by 4s and roman shades, quilt blocks and paint brushes, chalk lines and cooked sugar. Basically, people who could make things. With their own hands. Out of raw materials. It never really occurred to me that the rest of the world didn’t spend all of their free time firing ceramic pieces or turning wooden bowls or reupholstering furniture. Because of this background I tend to have a certain amount of faith that I can at least give a good attempt at learning to make most things. It is this optimism that drives me in much of what I do. (This might also be described as the “How Hard Could It Be? Syndrome”.)

I feel that life is not worth living without tremendous amounts of laughter. One of my favorite things about my family is that they make me laugh till I snort and, only very rarely, till I wet myself. Occasionally, I can be pretty funny myself, usually when I’m up late and get a bit slap happy. I try to include stories of the ridiculous stuff that goes on in my life. Hopefully, every once in awhile, I’ll give you a chuckle.

As I’ve said, “I believe that we can live well, do the things we love and still take into consideration the importance of our actions, specifically how those actions affect others and the world around us.” But, I’m not a hard core environmentalist. It isn’t that I don’t agree with the sentiment, I just lack the follow through. Over the years, I have, one step at a time, incorporated quite a few simple practices that really make a difference in how much I’m helping our Mother. I haven’t forgone my toilet paper or anything like that, but I think I have taken steps that make a difference. I believe that if every single one of us started using fabric bags for groceries and composting our organic food waste, it would make a more significant impact than if a half a percent of us turned our thermostat down to 50 during the winter. I applaud every effort that militant environmentalists are making on behalf of the planet (and therefore on my behalf), I just know human nature. And there’s a lot we can do that’s pretty easy. Sign me up for easy. I am all over easy.

Creative thoughts and ideas, as most of you may know, can swoop down upon us at any time. Throughout my entire life, I have most often been accosted late at night, oftentimes when the moon is full and shining encouragingly through my window. At these times I feel ripe. It’s as if every single idea is a perfect seed, ready to grow into… well truthfully, it’s hard to see that far. When I was very young, I would listen and try to remember. As I grew older, I began to turn away from these intrusions on my sleep. It wasn’t until a very dark time in my history, when sleep was elusive anyway, that I started to write these thoughts down as I had them. When I began to bring these nighttime musings into the light of day, that is when my life really became what I wanted it to be. Unsurprisingly, the name Wisdom of the Moon actually came to me at night as I pondered under what name to sell my aromatherapy necklaces. Then over time, my Etsy shop has evolved into this site, where I’m able to connect with people, not just one at a time, but by the thousands.
